Plan to repeal Alberta’s window safety rule for tenants draws ire

Proposed new rules leaked to the Edmonton Journal show the province may leave it up to landlords to decide whether to put in a window, even though eight Alberta renters have died in fires since 2005 because windows were too small, sealed shut or nonexistent.

Critics say the government has caved to pressure from apartment rental companies, which first tried and failed to have the costly safety laws overturned by the courts.
